Abstract

Artificial intelligence (AI), defined as the ability of machines to simulate the cognitive processes that are inherent to the human species, has, in little more than two years, become a disruptive force in multiple knowledge management sectors and especially in scientific publishing1. Natural language processing, a core skill of generative AI that has developed exponentially in less than a decade since the description of the transformer architecture2, allows machines to understand, interpret, and generate human-like text in a fluent and plausible way3. This facilitates the automated writing of documents, the synthesis of previous studies, and the production of new content. This profoundly affects how information is produced, shared, accessed, and evaluated. Generative AI applications will increase the efficiency and accessibility of research, but they also raise ethical and security challenges that require careful consideration.
