Abstract

The Advanced Chronic Renal Disease (ARCD) nursing practice is a particularly complex setting(1,2) for both patients and professionals. For this reason, and with the main objective of offering support to nursing staff during these consultations, the ERCA Unit of the Nephrology Service at La Paz University Hospital includes in its protocol the possibility of having the psychologist physically present at the consultation. This modality of action is in line with the evidence that an interdisciplinary team is necessary to improve the understanding of renal disease, and thus the health-related quality of life (HRQOL) of patients with ERCA(3). This protocol has been published as a letter to the editor in the journal Nefrologia(4), although in this version we emphasise differential aspects, mainly the specific functions of nurses in the ERCA practice and the definition of the patient profile to be used in this protocol. The aim of promoting its dissemination in the different scientific societies of the specialty is to remind us that in the comprehensive approach to the renal patient, there is much more that unites us than that which separates us.
