Abstract
Despite continued progress in kidney transplantation and the fact that this option remains the best for the treatment of chronic end-stage disease, it poses many challenges. Our country's experience in this area is unquestionable; In 2014, 4360 transplants were carried out in Spain and donation rates reached 36 donors per million population 1, which places the country among the best, not only in the number of transplants or in the research of the best immunosuppression, but also in the performance of complex techniques such as domino transplants. Moreover, records were broken in the number of transplants performed in 24 hours, as on 20 February of that year 45 transplants were performed which were made possible by 16 donors, 14 deceased and two alive 2. The work of the National Transplant Organisation and the regional organisations, the efforts of the multidisciplinary teams and the generosity of the citizens made it possible to achieve results that were difficult to improve. Once the obstacle of obtaining suitable organs has been overcome, the use of non-aggressive surgical techniques, which are fundamental for living person donation 3, and the use of new immunosuppressive therapies offer reasonable prospects of survival and good quality of life4. Avoiding rejection is fundamental and for this purpose specific preparation of the recipient may be necessary 5, but also avoiding infections, adequate nutrition and satisfactory social inclusion will guarantee that the suffering of the transplant recipient and the efforts of society will be compensated 6. Although nursing professionals are an essential part of the gears, few publications reach this Journal on the subject, so it is necessary for professionals working in any aspect of this field to share their experiences with the exciting world of nephrology nursing.
