Abstract

Although there are very important differences between the different autonomous communities, in Spain the use of peritoneal dialysis at home as a dialysis technique, despite the fact that it is carried out by the patient and his or her family and requires fewer resources, is much less than haemodialysis. The causes of this difference are not well established since numerous factors influence it, but it can be stated that different regional registers and numerous publications point to it as a technique that offers excellent results and that should be encouraged. In this sense, it can be stated that, in the last decade, the average annual prevalence per million population ranges from communities where it has a greater penetration such as Galicia and the Basque Country with approximately 90 patients per million population, to others such as Madrid-Centro and Catalonia with some 44 patients per million population. However, the annual incidence is growing moderately across the board, especially in the autonomous communities where it was initially less prevalent.
