Abstract

Chronic kidney disease is common in the elderly and the prevalence increases with age. The ageing of the dialysis population has characteristics that cannot be extrapolated to the general population. This pathology is also a public health challenge with important social and economic implications. Nephrological nurses are often the first professionals to detect numerous social, relational, and even economic problems presented by people on dialysis. Ageism is one of the emerging challenges that nephrology nurses will have to face in their daily practice. To do so, we will need to train, raise awareness, educate ourselves and others, tasks that are not alien to us and for which we will need to use the dissemination resources at our disposal to accompany society in the process of making visible, denouncing, and transforming a discrimination that affects us all. Writing this editorial to discuss ageism is an example of how nephrology nurses echo the need to care not only for the technical aspects, but to lead the changes necessary to live and care in a just and caring society.
