Abstract
Data on the incidence of CKD in children are scarce and may be underestimated as the early stages are often undiagnosed. European records show a prevalence of 59-74 per million in this population and the Spanish Paediatric Registry of Non-Terminal CKD (REPIR II), which records earlier stages, found a prevalence of more than 128 per million population. The disease is more frequent in males and the main cause is structural abnormalities1,2. Paediatric renal patients require rigorous monitoring by specialised teams that treat early alterations in their metabolism and growth. The control of bone mineral disease, anaemia and growth must be complemented with nutritional intervention since malnutrition is very frequent, all of which requires follow-up by specialized units.
