Abstract

Scientific knowledge in the field of health has been linked to professionals who have traditionally been recognised as having research capabilities (doctors, biologists, chemists, etc.). Other bodies, such as ours, have not carried out research tasks; they have been relegated to using the scientific knowledge built up by other professionals and, when not, to making decisions in situations where there are no serious studies to guide them in the right direction. It is this neglect of the research function that has played a decisive role in the fact that, until relatively recently, the University Schools of Nursing have not provided training in this area. However, nurses need to do research, according to the WHO, "Nursing must do research to help people achieve healthy lifestyles and adequate care" and it is our responsibility to provide the knowledge necessary to do so.
