Abstract
The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared 2020 as the International Year of Nurses and Midwives. The initiative has been joined by the International Confederation of Midwives (ICM), the International Council of Nurses (ICN), the Nursing Now campaign and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and will run for a full year. According to the WHO, nurses and midwives play "a crucial role in the delivery of health services, as they devote their lives to caring for mothers and children, administering life-saving vaccines, providing health advice, caring for the elderly and generally meeting essential day-to-day health needs. In addition, they are often the first and only place for care available in their communities. In order to achieve universal health coverage, the world needs to increase the number of nurses and midwives by 9 million"1.
