Abstract
Objective: To explore comprehensively the experience lived in the treatment of Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) and the meanings of care developed by nurses and family members who interact with CKD patients. Method: A qualitative study, phenomenological-hermeneutical approach, using the Van Manen´s theoretical framework, was carried out. 11 CKD patients, 5 caregivers and 5 nurses participated in the study, in the city of Neiva; information collected through in-depth interviews. Results: the dilemma between freedom and life emerged when building the sense of facing the treatment of Chronic Kidney Disease patients. Subthemes were framed in the hardness of hemodialysis, the meaning of the dialysis machine, the appearance of the arteriovenous fistula, the impact of the peritoneal catheter and diet. Conclusions: The treatment of the disease impacts the lives of people producing abrupt changes in their lives that leads them to recognize the finiteness of their existence, the alternatives to survive, the changes in their corporeality. The changes are not foreign to caregivers and nurses, called to provide support to cope with the treatment.
